Mayoral Column - Recognition of Volunteers

07/08/2023

Volunteers play a vital role for our local community.

According to 2021 Census data, 1 in 10 people in the Georges River area engaged in some form of voluntary work. This is a significant proportion of our population and demonstrates the Georges River culture of contributing and helping out the local community.

I’d like to thank all of our local volunteers and encourage people from across the Georges River to consider volunteering.

Volunteering Australia, the national peak body, describes how volunteering can give individuals a sense of purpose and achievement; it can help forge connections with others. Volunteering can also combat stress, loneliness and self-isolation, and allows us to share our talents and learn new skills.

If you would like to start volunteering within your local community, why not volunteer with Council?

We have our Bushcare program where volunteers can help manage our area’s remnant bushland by mitigating the effects of vegetation fragmentation, urban runoff, invasion of garden species and noxious weeds, vandalism and feral animals. Our volunteers learn new skills that help to improve the diversity of Georges River’s indigenous native flora and help create habitat for our native animals.

You can also volunteer your time at our libraries.

You could become an English Conversation Class Volunteer and support our (ESL) English as Second Language community members to build skills and confidence in speaking English.

If you are a Justice of the Peace, you can support our community across our five local libraries.

There are opportunities for students too. Our Duke of Edinburgh Program for Bronze, Silver and Gold levels cater for school students who are working towards achieving life skills. Year 10 work experience students are welcome to volunteer at our libraries, or at Hurstville Museum & Gallery.

We also have Work Placement opportunities in the library system for TAFE or University students who require practical placement to support their studies.

If you have a keen interest in history or art, and enjoy interacting with the general public, you may want to consider volunteering at the Hurstville Museum & Gallery.

Visit or email your local library or Hurstville Museum & Gallery to start your volunteering process.
