On 30 December 2021, Cr Nick Katris was voted in as Mayor of Georges River Council by his fellow Councillors for a 2 year term. Due to the outbreak of the Delta variant of COVID-19 virus in Greater Sydney in 2021, the Office of Local Government in consultation with the NSW Electoral Commissioner and NSW Health, postponed the Mayoral Election. As a result, the current Mayoral term will be 21 months. The role of Mayor includes:
Actively encourage community cohesion and civic awareness.
Acting as the spokesperson of Council representing the views of the council as to its local priorities.
Presiding at Council Meetings to ensure they are conducted efficiently, effectively and in accordance with the code of meeting practice and the Local Government Act 1993.
Ensuring the timely development and adoption of the strategic plans, programs and policies of Council.
Promoting the effective and consistent implementation of the strategic plans, programs and policies of Council.
Promoting partnerships between Council and key stakeholders.
Carrying out the civic and ceremonial functions of the Mayoral office.
Representing Council on regional organisations and at inter-governmental forums at regional, State and Commonwealth level.
