Water Pollution

There are three main types of water pollution:

  • Litter, including cigarette butts, paper and plastic bags

  • Chemical pollution, including detergents, oil or fertilisers

  • Environmental pollution, including garden clippings, soil or animal droppings.

Tips to Reduce Water Pollution

The following activities are easy ways to help reduce water pollution:

  • Wash your car on the grass and reduce detergents from running down the street drain

  • Use green waste bins to dispose of garden waste

  • Put all rubbish in the bin to avoid litter being swept into the street drains

  • Install sediment control measures on building sites.

Reporting Water Pollution

If you witness pollution in a drain, creek or waterway, please contact Council with the following details:

  • Time and date of the incident

  • Where the pollution was discovered

  • Your contact details.

Reporting pollution as close to the time of the incident as possible will greatly assist the investigation.
