LGBTQIA+ Communities

Georges River Council is home to a number of diverse communities and values its strong relationship with those who live, visit, play and work in the local government area.
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer, Intersex, Agender, Asexual and Ally (LGBTQIA+) communities are valued in the Georges River Area. Council has formed strong relationships with local organisations, conducted consultations with the community, and has been working towards eliminating discrimination and providing a safe environment for all.

Welcome Here

Council prides itself as a Safe Place as part of the Welcome Here Project, an initiative that supports organisations throughout Australia to create and promote environments that are visibly welcoming and inclusive of LGBTQIA+ communities.
The Welcome Here Project emerged in response to high levels of violence against LGBTQIA+ people in the late 90s. Businesses who wanted to offer a safe space for people who were under threat of violence began displaying ‘Safe Place’ stickers in their windows.
Council continues to promote the initiative and encourages local businesses to join up here.

Pride Month

Council also supports a number of initiatives to celebrate the local LGBTQIA+ community Pride Month events in June. Georges River has celebrated with rainbow pride flags and banners, a rainbow crossing, and rainbow lighting throughout the local government area. Activities such as Rainbow Storytime and the CALD LGBTQIA+ Forum have also been celebrated as part of Council’s commitment to Pride Month.

Grants and sponsorship

Georges River Council runs a number of grants and sponsorship programs that are designed to enable community organisations to partner with Council to help meet identified community needs. These programs support community organisations to offer alternative approaches to meeting community needs, and to develop programs and activities that encourage community participation and inclusion. If your group or organisation provides a service for local LGBTQIA+ communities, you may be eligible for funding support. Please visit our Community Grants page for more information.
