Operating a drone in Georges River

While drones can be great fun and give you a great visual experience, they also come with significant responsibilities.

We want our community to be responsible owners and operators of drones and to understand the unique risk we have in relation to Sydney Airport airspace.

Although they are small drones, they are regulated by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority or CASA. You will soon be required to register your drone with them.

If you are a drone owner and operator in Georges River, please register for CASA updates.

Know the rules

Some people don’t realise when they buy a drone that one of the rules is you must not fly over or above people of in a populous area. This could include beaches, parks, event or sports ovals where there is a game in progress.

Did you know we have had drones in parks in our community detected by Sydney Airport as entering the airspace?

If your drone weighs more than 250 grams, you must fly at least 5.5 kilometres away from a controlled airport. Controlled airports generally have a control tower at them. This is where you need to download a drone safety application to find out where you can and can’t fly.

You can find more information on the CASA drone rules page or view the following video.

Thinking of buying a drone?

Make sure the supplier is recognised by CASA as a drone safety advocate. These are responsible suppliers who have pledged to follow a specific set of guidelines when selling drones. This ensures they provide you important safety information on when, where, and how you can use your drone safely—before you take-off.

You can find more information on CASA’s Buying a Drone page.
