Mayoral Column - Kogarah Historical Society Local History Awards 2023 now open

16/08/2023

Georges River has a rich and interesting history, and it is wonderful that we have so many historical records of how we have lived over the centuries. Our history is the foundation of our current community, so I believe it’s important to understand our past in order to plan for our future.

There is an opportunity for Georges River residents to be part of the record making process. I would like to bring to your attention that the Kogarah Historical Society Local History Awards for 2023 have just opened.

Founded in 1970, the Kogarah Historical Society aims to encourage the study of Australian History and promote awareness of the history of the Kogarah Municipality.

It seeks to influence preservation of places of historical significance, and to research and publish local history for the interest of its members and the wider community.

They also provide resources for historical study and research, and undertake the collection of books, records, manuscripts and artefacts of historical significance to Kogarah.

Local residents can now submit an entry for the Kogarah Historical Society Local History Awards for 2023 before the deadline of 14 December 2023. Through the awards, the Society hopes to encourage research, to record events in our district’s past and to capture memoirs before they pass out of living memory.

The Society are awarding a prize of $500 to the best entry, which focuses on any aspect of Kogarah or the wider Georges River Council area. Topics suggested include buildings, events, personalities, environmental heritage and sport.

All entries must be in English, unpublished and be the original work of the entrant. There are no word length requirements, but entries should give references and captioned illustrations are encouraged. The submitted essays will be housed and catalogued and indexed by the Society’s Local Studies Library.

I wish you well to capture our people, activities, environment and architecture so we have records to look back on for generations to come.
