Responsible Cafés
1 billion take away cups and lids are being send to landfill and/or littered every year. Cafés can now reduce or eliminate disposable coffee cups by offering a discount to customers with reusable takeaway cups! Georges River Council has partnered with Responsible Cafés to encourage cafés in the Local Government Area to do so. By becoming a Responsible Café, your business will save money and reduce the amount of coffee lids and cups going to landfill.
Participating cafés instantly receive a downloadable vintage-style poster and an information sheet so they can educate customers on the issue.
If you want to learn more, visit the Responsible Cafés website, otherwise you can register your cafe immediately here.
Waste Smart Tips for Business Purchases
We have put together some useful tips on how to choose the right packaging and containers to reduce waste and become a sustainable business.
Takeaway containers
Selecting sauce containers and cutlery
-
Look for sugarcane options with a PLA bioplastic lid, and avoid single use sauce sachets. Instead, order your sauce in bulk and decant into sugarcane options or directly onto the food.
-
For cutlery, bamboo/wood is the best option. Avoid PLA options as they are not home compostable.
Coffee cups and lids
-
If you have not become a Responsible Café, check the information above. Otherwise, look for PLA lined paper cup options and make sure your cup is compostable. For lids, choose a bagasse (sugarcane) or PLA lid.
-
For cold cups and straws - look for compostable PLA lined paper cup options.
Reducing to save money and waste
-
Most customers will be eating at home and will not need cutlery, so we recommend only offering them if requested or needed.
-
If your item has a side sauce, you may be able to include the sauce container inside with the food.
Make sure it's properly certified
