ZOONOSES Open Day (Council Led Event)

20/07/2024 - Hurstville Museum & Gallery

Visit Hurstville Museum & Gallery for an Open Day filled with activities for all ages! Touch and hold live Australian invertebrates, eat an edible insect at our tasting station, and much more!

ZOONOSES, our current Main Gallery exhibition, explores how we perceive certain animal hosts in the context of fear of their association to disease. Through drawing and lithography, artist Dr Nicola Hooper uses fairy-tale iconology and rhymes, and associated anthropomorphism to both discuss and educate about zoonotic viruses (animal diseases that cross-over to humans).

During this Open Day, visitors will be able to join at any time between 10.30am to 12.30pm to touch and hold live Australian invertebrates, including giant burrowing cockroaches, millipedes, snails, tarantulas and scorpions! Educators will show visitors how important invertebrates are in our environment in a fun and interactive way.

For the brave ones, we will also have an edible insect tasting station between 10.30am and 12.30pm. An educator will be on hand to explain the health, nutritional and environmental benefits of edible insects, as well as how we have commercialised edible insect farming in Australia.

During the day we will have both an exhibition trail and a drop-in activity for the whole family. Come along and create your own insect hat to take home!
