Inspired by our current exhibition Focus: Australian Government Photographers exhibition, Hurstville Museum & Gallery invites all photographers, beginners and experienced, to enter our monthly photo challenge on Instagram!
With a new theme each month, simply tag us on Instagram to be featured in our Stories at the end of the month. Post before the 17th of each month to enter the challenge.
Photo Challenge themes for each month:
June - Animals, July - Rivers, August - Buildings.
Focus: Australian Government Photographers is a touring exhibition developed by National Archives of Australia and supported by the National Collecting Institutions Touring and Outreach Program.
The exhibition is free of charge and open at Hurstville Museum & Gallery until 17 August 2025.

Discovery Writers at Hurstville Museum & Gallery

Love writing? Join the Discovery Writers for a fun and inspiring writing session. The Discovery Writers group is a mix of writers and poets who meet in a collaborative environment to provide opportunities for the development and publication of writing.
During this session, the group will use the current exhibition, Focus: Australian Government Photographers, to inspire their writing employing ekpharasis. The term is used for expression that vividly describes various forms of art, including photography.

These sessions are ideal for participants seeking to connect with themselves, their creativity and community. Each session will focus on different themes and mediums.

'Focus' Open Day
|
Celebrate creativity, history, and hands-on fun activities for all ages with our Focus Open Day. Whether you're an art lover, history buff, or looking for a fun family day out, there's something for everyone!
Tours: enjoy a guided tour of the Focus exhibition. Stating times at 10.30am, 11.30am, 1.30pm and 3.00pm.
Light painting activity: Join us to create your own long exposure photo capturing moving images of light! We will offer 15minute slots thought the day. Once on site, register your interest to participate in this experience but be quick as this will be a popular one!
For the whole family: During the whole day, embark on a family activity trail or enjoy free drop-in activities, including creating your own scratch board frame! (Only while materials last).
