A home-based food business is when your home kitchen is used to store, prepare, or cook food for sale. Even though it operates from home, it is treated like any other food business under the food law. This means you must meet the same food safety rules and standards.

If you’re planning to start a home-based food business, you’ll need to:

• Get approval from Council.

• Notify Council about your food business.

• Follow all food safety laws and requirements.

• Check if you need a Trade Waste Agreement or other agreements with Sydney Water.

• Have a Food Safety Supervisor with a Food Safety Supervisor Certificate (if required).
