Walking is a healthy and convenient way to get around, but it is important to stay alert when travelling near roads. Taking a few simple precautions can help keep you and others safe.
 

LOOK Before You Cross

LOOK Before You Cross is a pedestrian safety initiative that reminds people to stop, look and check for traffic before crossing the road.

With funding support from Transport for NSW, Council has installed decals at pedestrian crossings and other busy pedestrian locations across the local government area to encourage safer crossing behaviours.
 

Stop. Look. Listen. Think.

Before crossing the road:

• Stop at a safe distance from the kerb.

• Look both ways for approaching vehicles.

• Listen for traffic and other road users.

• Think about whether it is safe to cross.

Remember: Never assume a driver has seen you or will stop.
 

Pedestrian Safety Tips

To stay safe when walking near roads:

• Always look before crossing the road and make sure it is safe to cross.

• Use pedestrian crossings where available.

• Remove your earphones and put your phone away before crossing the road.

• Never assume a driver can see you or will stop for you.

• Check for turning vehicles at intersections and while crossing the road.

• ​ Wait for the green walk signal at traffic lights.

• Avoid crossing between parked cars or in front of or behind buses and large vehicles.

• Wear bright or reflective clothing at night or in low light conditions.

• At traffic lights, wait for the green walk signal before crossing.

• Take extra care around trucks and buses, as drivers may have limited visibility due to blind spots.At traffic lights, wait for the green walk signal before crossing.
   

Extra Care for Children and Older Pedestrians

Children and older people can be more vulnerable near roads.
When walking with children:

• Hold their hand near roads and crossings.

• Teach them to stop, look, listen and think before crossing.

• Always supervise young children around traffic.
