Mobile Phone Use While Driving

Using a mobile phone while driving is dangerous and increases the risk of a crash. Anything that takes your eyes off the road, your mind off driving, or your hands off the steering wheel can put you and others at risk. Being distracted can slow your reaction time and make it harder to see pedestrians, bicycle riders, traffic lights and other hazards.

Stay Safe

  • Put your phone away before starting your journey.

  • Turn on the "Do Not Disturb While Driving" function.

  • Let calls go to voicemail.

  • Ask a passenger to answer calls or messages if needed.

  • Pull over safely and legally before using your phone.

  • Focus on driving and avoid all distractions.

  • Look out for cyclists, who share the road with other NSW road users. Read more on Sharing the road with bicycle riders | NSW Government.

Mobile Phone Rules

  • Full licence holders may use a mobile phone only in accordance with NSW road rules, such as with an approved cradle or hands-free system.

  • Learner and Provisional (P1 and P2) drivers must not use any mobile phone function while driving or riding.

This restriction includes:

  • Hands-free calls.

  • Bluetooth.

  • Voice activation.

  • Music or other audio.

  • Navigation and GPS.

  • Phones secured in cradles.

  • Interacting with the phone while stopped in traffic.

Remember

A quick glance at your phone can have serious consequences. Your full attention should always be on the road.

We have included the "Know the Rules video" below.
