Mayoral Column - Saying NO to Domestic Violence in Georges River

09/12/2024

As Mayor of Georges River, I am proud to stand with our community in saying “no” to domestic violence. On Friday 29 November, more than 1,000 community members joined together for the annual NO Domestic Violence Walk, a powerful display of solidarity in the ongoing fight to eliminate violence against women and children.

Beginning at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium, we marched through the streets to the old Kogarah Council Chambers, united by a shared commitment to create a safer future. The event, which followed International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on 25 November, was a profound reminder of the strength in community action.

I was deeply moved by the words of our keynote speaker, Simone O’Brien, who shared her courageous story of resilience and determination. Her message resonated with all present and underscored the importance of education and early intervention
in preventing domestic violence. It acted as a reminder to look out for red flags early in relationships.

Our walk brought together a diverse cross-section of the community: local students, Councillors and Council staff, St George Police, emergency services, and representatives from community groups. A special moment was witnessing high school students pledging their commitment to fostering respectful and healthy relationships—an investment in a brighter, violence-free future.

Statistics paint a stark reality:

  • 1 in 6 women has experienced physical or sexual violence by a partner since the age of 15.

  • 1 in 4 women has faced emotional abuse in their relationships.

  • Alarmingly, one woman is killed every 11 days in Australia due to domestic violence.

These figures are unacceptable. As a community, we must raise our voices and take action. Each of us has a role to play in challenging inappropriate behaviours and fostering a culture of respect and safety.

Our annual walk is just one part of this effort, but it sends a clear message: Georges River will not tolerate domestic violence. Together, we can create meaningful, lasting change.

If you or someone you know needs support, please visit Georges River Council's Domestic and Family Violence webpage for resources and assistance.

Let’s continue to stand united and work towards a future where everyone in our community feels safe and valued.
