Mayoral Column - Prioritising Road Safety in the Georges River: National Road Safety Week 2025

09/05/2025

With National Road Safety Week rolling around the corner on 11 May to 18 May 2025, I would like to take a moment to remind residents of the importance of road safety and safe driving practices.

National Road Safety Week is an annual initiative of the SARAH Group launched by Peter Frazer OAM, following the tragic loss of his daughter Sarah in a road crash in 2012. The week highlights the impact of road trauma and ways to reduce it.

Each year around 1300 people are killed on roads across Australia and in 2024 there were 336 fatalities on NSW roads.

Traffic injury remains the biggest killer of Australian children under 15 and the second-biggest killer of all Australians aged between 15 and 24.

As a community we need to come together to ensure that we take care when we are on the road. I also extend this message to taking care in carparks or even when you are leaving your driveway.

Road safety is a shared responsibility, and the NSW Government is committed to lowering trauma on NSW roads.

To uphold road safety practices, Georges River Council is partnering with Kidsafe NSW, Transurban and Transport for NSW to offer free child restraint installation and checking for Georges River residents. The first few dates are booked up but there are still spots available on 17 June via Council’s What’s On page. I applaud local parents and carers who have already booked and taken up this great opportunity to keep their little ones safe.

Let us commit to making Georges River a safe community by adhering to road safety practices.
