This National Science Week, from Saturday 9 to Sunday 17 August, Georges River Council is proud to support a range of exciting activities that make science fun, accessible and engaging for people of all ages.
On Saturday 9 August 2025, I invite you to join us at Hurstville Library for Play and Explore, a free family-friendly event that’s all about hands-on learning, curiosity and creativity.
Throughout the day, the library will be transformed into a mini science playground, with rockets to launch, fossils to make, and an augmented reality solar system to explore. Kids can take part in experiments, get up close with dinosaurs, and even build their own paper rocket to take home.
There’ll be sessions for all age groups, from Storytime Science for our little ones, to the Fizz, Bang, Pop! science show and fossil workshops for older children. Whether your child is into space, dinosaurs or explosions (the safe kind!), there’s something for everyone. All activities are free or low-cost, with bookings essential for selected sessions.
And if you’re up for a bit more adventure, take part in Solar Explorer, a large-scale, self-guided trail running during National Science Week. Starting at Hurstville Library, which represents the Sun, the trail stretches across the Georges River area with planets placed at their true-to-scale distances. Along the way, you’ll find signs, clues, and fun facts that make it a fun way to get outside, explore our neighbourhood, and truly appreciate just how vast our solar system is.
National Science Week is a wonderful reminder that learning can happen anywhere, and curiosity has no age limit. I encourage you to bring the family along, ask questions, and try something new.
