Mayoral Column - Highlighting the Hidden Efforts of Our Volunteers for the 2025 NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards

11/04/2025

It is time to formally recognise our wonderful volunteers who actively serve our community. I am delighted to share that you can now submit a nomination for the Centre of Volunteering’s 2025 NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards.

As one of the largest annual programs, the NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards seeks to champion our local volunteers who strengthen the fabric of our community. I am incredibly thankful for our volunteers who have joined various events and groups across Council and have banded together to make a difference in our community.

On Sunday 2 March 2025, local volunteers participated in the 35th Clean Up Australia Day resulting in 1.42 Tonnes of litter collected from parks, streets and creeks.

Across the year, a number of our volunteer groups including Bushcare volunteers, English conversation class volunteers and JP services volunteers participate in improving our local community. These are just some of the ways that our volunteers seek to selflessly enrich the lives of those around us. The efforts of our community volunteers should not go unspoken.

Last year, the Centre for Volunteering recognised Penshurst local Tanima Banerjee as she was awarded the Southern Sydney Adult Volunteer of the Year Award for her many hours of educational support, providing language assistance and fundraising for cancer research.

If you know someone worthy of being awarded, I encourage you to nominate them for one of the 2025 NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards. Whether it’s a neighbour who engages in conservation of our flora and fauna or a retiree who volunteers at a local food bank, volunteerism deserves to be celebrated.

Nominations will close on Friday 23 May 2025, with local ceremonies being held between August and October 2025.
