Water Stories: Life Along the Georges River

This is a Council led event.

Clive James Library and Service Centre, Kogarah.
04/09/2025 - 28/09/2025

Water Stories: Life Along the Georges River is a captivating exhibition that dives deep into the rich and complex relationship between people and the Georges River throughout history. Presented as part of History Week 2025 and running from 4 September to 28 September 2025 in the foyer of Clive James Library, Kogarah, this free exhibition explores the many ways water has shaped life, culture, and community in the Georges River Local Government Area.

From the enduring water stewardship of First Nations communities to the transformative impacts of urban development, this exhibition brings together stories of connection, survival, recreation, and change. Discover how the river has been a source of sustenance through fishing and oyster farming, a site of leisure and sport, a route for transport and trade, and a witness to both celebration and tragedy.

This exhibition invites the community to reflect on how water connects us, sustains us, and shapes our shared past.

The exhibition is for all ages—families, history enthusiasts, and anyone curious about the River. There is no prior experience or equipment needed to engage with the exhibition.

The exhibition is curated by the Research and Community History staff at Georges River Libraries and is designed to be self guided.
