Media Lab: International Games Month: Create and Animate Your Own 3D Avatar

Learn how to create a 3D avatar using your mobile phone and how to animate it using free and easy to use tools like graphics platform Mixamo.
 
Whether you scan yourself or a friend, this fun and beginner friendly workshop will show you how to bring characters to life with movement. The skills learnt in this workshop are perfect for creative storytelling, games, and digital projects!  
 
Join us in the Media Lab this November to celebrate International Games Month and get the chance to learn from augmented reality (AR) expert Paul Kouppas.
 
In this session, participants will:

  • Be introduced to creating a personalised 3D avatar.

  • Learn the basics of free 3D scanning and modelling tools.

  • Animate an avatar and bring it to life!

  • Learn to export and share animated creations.

Please note, this course is a two-week commitment so please ensure you can attend both sessions before booking.

Week 1 - Scan & Create
Learn how to scan a person using 3D scanning apps on your mobile. Work in pairs to capture, refine and export your own 3D avatar using the free mobile application Kiri Engine.
 
Week 2 - Animate and Share
Upload and rig your avatar using Mixamo. Explore basic animations and export options for video, games, or social media.

About the Facilitator:
Paul is a highly regarded professional in the field of augmented reality and mixed reality. With extensive experience, Paul has successfully developed and executed numerous interactive projects for prominent brands. His expertise spans product design, real-time 3D, and immersive technology.
 
About the Media Lab and Digital Tools collection:
The Media Lab boasts a professional studio set up with a cyclorama wall, green screens, studio lights and Surface Studios with the full Adobe Creative Suite. The digital tool library contains cameras, recording equipment and other digital accessories that can be borrowed for free with your library membership.
