Georges River Seniors Program

Our support enables the groups to run a variety of regular free or low-cost programs and activities. Activities include exercise and dance classes, computer clubs, multicultural community groups, art and heritage groups.

Group descriptions and costs

  • Exercise
    • Yoga Exercise - Each session involves yoga and stretching to get your body moving. $8.00 per session. 

    • Indoor Volleyball - Promoting active and healthy ageing for seniors through gentle indoor light volleyball programs. All community members are welcome to join. Voluntary gold coin donation.

    • Active Ageing Group - Join registered instructor and personal trainer Coralie to improve health and fitness with a warm and friendly group. $8.00 per session.

    • Rouli Ball Exercise Group - Rouli ball is a combination of badminton and tai chi. Join the group to have fun and exercise. No fee. 

    • SHARE Exercise Group - SHARE provides exercise classes for over fifties throughout the community. This session includes zumba and yoga. $65.00 per school term. 

    • Active Living Exercise Classes - The program is designed for individuals with heart and lung conditions; however it caters for all older adults in our community. The focus is on building physical function, strength and balance to help people maintain their independence, health and wellbeing. $7.00 per class. 

  • Art, Culture and Continued Learning
    • Sea Snow Arts Group - The group is a combination arts group of song, dance, piano and traditional Chinese art. $30.00 fee per year for materials. 

    • Seniors Chess Club - A social chess setting for anyone who knows how to play. All boards and sets provided. No fee. 

    • Fiestaville Multicultural Community Choir - Enjoy singing songs from around the world as well as new music. The conductor is a talented instrumentalist and songwriter. All are welcome, no experience needed. $50.00 per term.

    • St George Art Society Art Ability - Experience different art forms, techniques, and materials to exercise creativity and produce original art. All new members welcome. $10.00 to cover materials. 

    • St George Art Society Sketch Group - Develop sketching confidence using various tools and mediums. Sessions are an opportunity to discover new awareness, confidence and develop new imaging tools. $10.00 members, $15.00 for non-members.

    • St George Art Society Life Drawing Group - Sketching and painting with live models. A very friendly group and beginners are welcome. Light morning tea provided. $10.00 members, $15.00 for non-members. 

    • Kogarah Historical Society - The Kogarah Historical Society runs the Carss Park Cottage Museum. The meeting includes a speaker on a historical topic, afternoon tea and a business meeting. $5.00 entry. 

    • Kogarah Writers Group - The group has been meeting since 2011 and members take turns chairing the meeting and giving the group writing prompts. Everyone writes 2-3 pages on the said topic and everyone shares pieces brought for the group to review. 50 cents to cover tea and coffee. 

  • Social and Language Groups
    • Nepalese Grandparents Social Group - Run by Advance Diversity Services, sessions include gentle exercises and information about health, parenting and challenges relating to migration. No fee.

    • Spanish Speakers Group - The group meets to hear guests speakers discuss health issues, play bingo and enjoy lunch, all in Spanish. $5.00 per session for lunch. 

    • Greek Men's Group - This group targeted to Greek-speaking men is a time to get together, play cards and enjoy each other's company. Larger events are organised throughout the year. New members are encouraged. $15.00 per year. 

    • CASS Activity Group - This Chinese activity group supports senior social and physical wellbeing. Sessions can include line dancing, gentle exercise, bingo and singing. Costs are $1.50 - $3.00 per session.

    • Resourceful Australian Indian Network - This program offers support to Sub-continental Indian Seniors. Join the group for exercise, singing, social time and an Indian vegetarian lunch. Membership required. 

    • Georges River MS Peer Support - An informative and supportive group for people with MS and their carers and family. There is a facilitator at each session to guide conversations. No fee. 

    • Italian Group - The group meets each week to chat and enjoy each other's company over some tea and coffee, all in their first language of Italian. $2.00 per session to cover tea and coffee. 

    • St George Women's Interfaith Network - A women's interfaith space to discuss commonalities and share ideas, over a cup of tea or coffee. All religions are welcome. Gold coin donations welcome. 

  • Dance
    • Belly Dancing - A fun belly dance class with no experience necessary. Everyone is welcome and you can go at your own pace. $5.00 per class.

    • Line Dancing - A social line dancing group that welcomes beginners. The group aims to keep seniors active and socially engaged in the community. A small fee per session. 

    • New Vogue Dance Club - The group meets weekly to exercise, socialise and learn new dances. $3.00 per session. 

    • Dance for Parkinson’s - A dance class for the Parkinson’s and seniors community of the Georges River area. Everybody welcome. Classes cater for all mobilities and abilities. Donations welcome.
