Our role in an Emergency

Council plays a vital role at every stage of emergency management in their local area.

Council is required to comply with emergency management laws. So, the Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC) was established. The Committee includes senior members from Emergency Service agencies and key local services. They handle planning, preparing, and testing for local emergency management. It focusses on an all-agencies, all-hazards approach.

The LEMC is responsible to the Sydney Metro Emergency Management Regional Committee.

What is the structure of the LEMC?

Councils must support the LEMC and the Local Emergency Operations Controller (LEOCON).

Committee members include:

  • A senior representative of Council who is the Chair of the LEMC.

  • The Local Emergency Management Officer (LEMO).

  • The Local Emergency Operations Controller (LEOCON). Currently a police officer stationed within our region.

  • Local representatives from each emergency service and agencies with roles in the area.

Emergency Management Plan - EMPLAN

We create emergency plans, so our community is ready in the event of an emergency.

The LEMC created the Georges River Local Emergency Management Plan (EMPLAN). It follows Section 29(1) of the State Emergency and Rescue Management Act 1989. The Sydney Metro committee approved it in 2022.

The Local Emergency Management Committee refers to the Local Emergency Management Plan. This plan details how to prevent, prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies.
