Georges River Council is seeking community feedback on a proposal to officially name the rebuilt boardwalk at Morshead Drive Reserve, Hurstville Grove, the Sharyn Cullis Boardwalk.
Place naming is the formal process of giving an official name to a public space. Names for Council facilities are chosen according to Georges River Council’s Place Naming Policy and must be approved by Council before becoming official.
Dr. Sharyn Cullis was a passionate environmentalist, educator, and researcher who lived in Oatley from 1985 until her passing in 2022. Dr Cullis made significant contributions to protecting the Georges River and its surrounding environment, including her work with Streamwatch and Riverhealth monitoring programs, as well as her role as a community representative on the Georges River Combined Councils Committee (now Riverkeeper), where she earned a place on its Honour Board.
The proposal recognises Dr. Cullis’ lasting contributions and ensures her legacy is formally acknowledged within the Georges River community.
Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, “Dr. Sharyn Cullis dedicated her life to protecting the Georges River and raising awareness about our natural environment.
“Naming this boardwalk in her honour is a meaningful way to recognise her contribution and ensure her legacy continues to be celebrated by our community.
“I encourage all residents to take this opportunity to provide feedback on the proposal”.
The public consultation period is open until Sunday 26 October 2025.
