Celebrating Pride Month this June

27/05/2025

Georges River Council will host events and initiatives during June for Pride Month to show ongoing support of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Pride Month celebrates the history, resilience and achievements of the LGBTQIA+ community. This year’s theme is ‘Love, Respect, Power’, and focuses on celebrating diversity, unity, and equality.

Council’s Social Justice Charter highlights our commitment to eliminating discrimination and creating a safe, inclusive environment for all.

As part of Council’s ongoing efforts, the LGBTQIA+ community is an identified vulnerable group within our Social Justice Charter, alongside other groups such as culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, youth, seniors, and people with disabilities.

We have built relationships with local organisations, consulted with the community, and continue to work towards eliminating discrimination and providing a safe environment for all.

Council is excited to offer a range of initiatives starting from 1 June 2025, including a Pride Mural, Rainbow Walkway, Film Screenings, Youth Performance Night and more.

Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, “Georges River is a diverse community with a commitment to fostering social cohesion, respect and inclusivity.

“Our Social Justice Charter aims to drive social change and to improve the lives of our community by building a culture of access and participation, respect, connection and empowerment, and equity for everyone.

“"Pride Month shines a light on the power of community, the beauty of connection, and the dignity we all share. We look forward to welcoming everyone to a full calendar of events, celebrations, and conversations.”

Council is also a member of the Welcome Here Project, an initiative supporting organisations and businesses across Australia to create visible and inclusive spaces for LGBTQIA+ communities. We encourage all local businesses and organisations to join the project by registering on the Welcome Here website.
