Council is undertaking a feasibility study to find the most suitable location for an indoor basketball and multisport facility in Georges River.

Georges River Council has engaged RPS AAP Consulting to do the feasibility study.

The feasibility study is being done in collaboration with Basketball NSW.
 

Why does the community need an indoor basketball and multisport facility?

Council has a Community Infrastructure Needs Assessment and Acquisition Strategy (CINAAAS) and an Open Space, Recreation and Community Facilities Strategy identifying the current deficit of basketball facilities.

The NSW Office of Sport recognises that Sydney is facing a significant shortfall in sport infrastructure, including indoor facilities. Its Future Needs of Sport Infrastructure Study emphasises that increased investment in multi-use, accessible indoor venues are essential to meet growing population needs, remove participation barriers, and support the long-term sustainability of community sport.
 

What will the community benefits be?

An indoor basketball and multisport facility delivers significant health and wellbeing benefits by providing safe, reliable, year-round access to physical activity regardless of weather. It encourages participation across all age groups, helping to reduce chronic health issues while supporting mental wellbeing through regular exercise and social interaction. By accommodating a wide range of activities, it ensures broad appeal and maximises community use.

Beyond health, such a facility acts as a central hub for community connection and inclusion. It creates opportunities for people to come together through sport, events, and programs, strengthening social ties and fostering a sense of belonging. It is particularly valuable for engaging young people in positive, structured activities while also supporting inclusive participation for seniors, beginners, and people with disabilities.

An indoor basketball and multisport facility also provides economic and long-term community benefits. It generates local employment, attracts competitions and events, and increases spending in surrounding businesses. Over time, it becomes essential social infrastructure that enhances liveability, supports population growth, and promotes a more active Georges River community.
 

What locations are in consideration?

Council has identified two potential locations for inclusion in the study.

• Johnny Warren Indoor Sports Stadium - Penshurst.

• Tallawalla Reserve - Beverly Hills.

These will be investigated as well as other suitable locations in the Georges River area. These shortlisted potential sites will then be consulted with the community.
