Temporary Closure of Hurstville Library

Hurstville Library will temporarily close from 1 December 2025 to allow for essential fire system improvements, including a new sprinkler system.
 

Service Availability

During the closure a pop-up library will be available at the Georges River Civic Centre, located at the corner of MacMahon and Dora Streets, Hurstville.
 
Community members can continue to:

  • Access Limited collections of popular new and just returned items, Quick Reads, Newspapers, Children’s books and DVDs.

  • Collect reservations.

  • Access digital resources via the Georges River Libraries catalogue.

  • Access public computers.

  • Access online services.

  • Access Wi-Fi.

  • Access printing, copying and scanning facilities.

  • Speak with library staff.

Regular Hurstville Library programs, as well as a fun range of school holiday activities to keep families and young people connected during January, will be delivered at the nearby Blackshaw Gould Community Pavilion in the Hurstville Oval precinct at the corner of Dora and Gordon Streets, Hurstville.

Services will continue to be available at Council’s other libraries located at:

  • Clive James Library and Service Centre, Kogarah.

  • Oatley Library.

  • When will the library reopen?
    Hurstville Library is expected to reopen on 14 February 2026 for Library Lovers Day.
  • Where can I access library services during the closure?

    While Hurstville Library is closed there will be a pop-up library in the Georges River Council Civic Centre, located at the corner of MacMahon and Dora Streets, Hurstville. At the pop-up library, people will be able to speak to a librarian, pick up reservations, borrow from a limited range of collections, and access public computers, Wi-Fi, printing, copying and scanning.
     
    The limited collections available at the Civic Centre pop up library include:

    • Popular new and just returned items.

    • Quick Reads.

    • Newspapers.

    • Children’s books.

    • DVDs.​

  • Will Justice of the peace services be available in the Civic Centre?

    Justice of the Peace services will be available at the pop-up library in the Civic Centre at select times, please check the Council’s Justice of the Peace webpage for the updated schedule as well as other locations where the service can be accessed.

  • Will my current library loans be affected by the closure?

    No, you will still be able to borrow and return items at the Civic Centre in Hurstville, as well as at the Georges River Council libraries. After hours returns will also still be available at Hurstville Library.

    We will also extend loan periods across December and January so you won’t need to return your items if you can’t make it to the library.

  • Can I still access digital resources?

    Yes! Our digital resources including eBooks, audiobooks, movies and more will be available 24/7 through the library website. All you need is your library membership.

  • What collections are available to loan at the Georges River Civic Centre?

    The limited collections available at the Civic Centre pop up library include:

    • Popular new and just returned items.

    • Quick Reads.

    • Newspapers.

    • Children’s books.

    • DVDs.

  • Can I request items from the Hurstville Library collection while the building is closed?

    While building work is in progress, items in the Hurstville Library collection will not be available. Items in the collections of the other Georges River libraries will be available to reserve and collect from Civic Centre.

  • How can I stay informed about the closure and reopening?
