Georges River Council would like to update the community about remediation works at Kempt Field, Allawah.

Kempt Field is currently closed while the NSW Government carries out important remediation works to address historical landfill issues beneath the reserve.

The site was used as a private landfill until 1978. Investigations found areas of ground movement (subsidence) and buried waste that need to be managed to improve the long-term safety and stability of the park.
 

What work is being carried out?

Remediation works are underway to install a protective clay layer, known as a cap, over the former landfill area.

This cap will help separate the buried waste from the surface and reduce risks to future park users.

After the cap is installed, the site will be landscaped and replanted with suitable vegetation that will not damage the protective layer.
 

Why is the park closed?

Parts of Kempt Field were closed between 2022 and 2023 after investigations identified ground subsidence and contamination linked to the former landfill.

The park will remain closed while remediation works are completed to ensure public safety and allow construction activities to be carried out safely.
 

Project update

Recent wet weather has delayed some works on site. Subject to suitable weather conditions, remediation works are expected to be completed in October 2026.
