What to Expect

Hazard reduction burns help reduce vegetation fuel loads and lower the risk and intensity of future bushfires.

During the burn, residents may notice:

  • Smoke in the area.

  • Hot embers and ash.

  • Increased activity from fire crews and emergency vehicles.

How to Prepare

To reduce the impact of smoke and embers, residents are encouraged to:

  • Keep doors and windows closed where possible.

  • Bring outdoor furniture, cushions and other loose items indoors, or cover them securely.

  • Retract plastic or synthetic pool covers to prevent ember damage.

  • Remove washing from clotheslines.

  • Ensure pets have access to a sheltered area.

  • Limit outdoor activity if you have asthma or a respiratory condition. If symptoms develop, follow your medical advice or seek medical assistance.

  • Drive with caution, keep vehicle windows closed, slow down in smoky conditions and turn on headlights.

  • Stay out of the burn area after the operation has been completed to protect your safety and support environmental restoration works.

Health Information

Smoke from hazard reduction burns can affect people differently. People with asthma, respiratory conditions, heart disease, older adults, young children and pregnant women should take extra care and avoid prolonged exposure to smoke where possible.
