Georges River Council has introduced new, upgraded bins with built-in features designed to improve waste collection and reduce environmental impact as part of its ongoing Bin Replacement Program.
Each bin has a unique serial number linked to the property address. This helps ensure bins are collected correctly and returned to the right home. Waste trucks are equipped to read these serial numbers during collection, confirming the bin’s location before it is emptied.
These serial numbers also help Council and its waste contractor identify missed services, track the number of bins collected, and detect unauthorised or unpaid bins. If a bin goes missing, the serial number can help it be returned to the correct address—or removed if stolen or misused.
Importantly, the bins do not have GPS or tracking devices. They cannot monitor your location, or the contents of your bin and they do not have a power source. Only Council and its waste contractor, Veolia, have access to the bin data, in line with strict privacy policies.
As the current bins reach the end of their life cycle, they will be recycled and used to help create the new bins, which will be made from up to 80% recycled material. Each bin is clearly marked with the Georges River Council logo and features helpful waste disposal tips stamped on the lid. Bin sizes are also printed under the lid, making it easier for residents to check their capacity.
New collection trucks are also being used to support the rollout. These trucks are fitted with real-time tracking to improve service efficiency and make sure contract standards are met.
Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, “The introduction of smart bin technology marks a major step forward in how we manage waste services across our community.
“These upgrades allow us to deliver a more accurate, efficient, and sustainable system for all residents.
“Residents can feel confident knowing that our upgraded bins and new collection systems are designed to reduce waste, prevent service issues, and ensure every bin is in the right place at the right time.
“Sustainability is at the forefront of our waste objectives, and this is one of many actions to ensure that we have a focus on sustainability for our community.”
