Have Your Say: Draft Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) Operations Policy

24/03/2026

Georges River Council is seeking community feedback on the draft Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) Operations Policy.

Council is permitted to operate CCTV cameras in public places under the Local Government Act 1993. CCTV helps keep the community safe by:

  • Discouraging crime and damage to facilities.

  • Supporting Police after incidents.

  • Reducing illegal dumping.

The draft Policy explains how Council operates CCTV cameras and how footage is collected, stored and accessed. It also outlines the rules Council must follow to protect privacy and meet legal requirements.

The draft Policy is a revision of Council’s 2017 CCTV Operations Policy. It has been updated to reflect current NSW legislation, regulations and guidelines.

A key update is the new CCTV Assessment Tool. This tool will help Council assess requests for CCTV in a fair and consistent way. Under the draft Policy, Council would consider several factors when a request is received, including:

  • Local crime data.

  • Consultation with St George Police Area Command.

  • Internal service requests.

  • Existing CCTV coverage.

  • Consultation with security contractors.

  • Whether the site is suitable.

  • Financial implications.

  • Community interest, as reflected in the CCTV Installation Request Register.

Council invites the community to provide feedback and share suggestions to improve the draft CCTV Operations Policy.

Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, “This Policy helps ensure that CCTV is operated responsibly and transparently to support the safety of our community.

“I encourage residents to review the draft Policy and provide feedback during the exhibition period.”

The public exhibition is open until Sunday 15 April 2026.
