Call for community input on Draft Commercial Centres Strategy Part 2

02/10/2026

Residents, landowners, and businesses are invited to share their thoughts on Georges River Council's Draft Commercial Centres Strategy Part 2. You can provide feedback until 9 October 2026.

The Draft Commercial Centres Strategy Part 2 focuses on 37 commercial centres. These include Village, Small Village, and Neighbourhood centres in the Georges River area. The development of this draft Strategy involved a review of these smaller centres to determine where land use planning updates are needed to help businesses, create jobs, and support community services.

The Draft Strategy builds on Part 1, adopted by Council in 2019. That part set up a hierarchy for commercial centres in the Georges River area.

Mayor Elise Borg of Georges River Council said the Draft Strategy will help local commercial centres thrive. It aims to meet residents' needs in the future.

"Local shopping villages and neighbourhood centres play an important role in our community. They are places where people get daily services, support local businesses, and connect with their communities.”

"This draft strategy gives Council a long-term plan. It helps us prepare for the future of these centres. We want to make sure we have the right planning controls in place to meet the needs of our growing community."

Council reviewed 37 smaller commercial centres. Looking at many factors, including:

  • Accessibility.

  • Vacancy rates.

  • Business diversity.

  • Development activity.

  • Future growth opportunities.

  • Access to open space.

The review showed that most centres are performing well. They have low vacancy rates and strong local support. Additionally, there’s a diverse range of businesses and services available, so there’s no immediate need to review the planning controls for all centres.

The Draft Commercial Centres Strategy Part 2 is a strategic planning document. It doesn’t bring any immediate changes to zoning, planning rules, businesses, or properties.

It identifies possible future actions to guide the Council's planning for the next decade. These include urban design work, master planning, and reviews of current planning controls.
