The Last Daughter Screening, Book Signing and Panel Discussion with Aunty Brenda Matthews and Aunty Barb Simms
This is a Council led event.
13/02/2026 - Blackshaw Gould Community Pavilion.
On National Apology Day, join us for a special FREE screening of The Last Daughter, followed by a panel discussion with Aunty Brenda Matthews whose story the film brings to life, and local Bidjigal Traditional Owner, Aunty Barb Simms.
National Apology Day commemorates the anniversary of the Apology to Australia’s Indigenous Peoples delivered by Prime Minister Rudd on 13 February 2008. This National Apology to the Stolen Generations acknowledged the trauma and grief suffered by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as a result of past government policies, especially the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, their communities and their country.
The Last Daughter is the Stolen Generation story you’ve never heard. It is an award winning feature documentary that retells the story of Aunty Brenda Matthews, a Wiradjuri woman on her journey to heal the past by uncovering her story. Aunty Brenda’s inspiring journey to unearth the truth about her past, and to reconcile the two sides of her family is a true story of love, loss and reconnection.
At the conclusion of this special screening of The Last Daughter, we will break for refreshments. We are then privileged to be joined by Aunty Brenda and local Bidjigal Traditional Owner, Aunty Barb Simms, as they share their reflections on the film and National Apology Day. Aunty Barb is a survivor of the Stolen Generations. She is the Deputy Chair of the NSW/ACT Stolen Generation Council and a member of Georges River Council's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee.
We encourage the Georges River community to read the Apology to Australia’s Indigenous Peoples. You can learn more about why it was delivered by reading the Bringing Them Home Report.
Aunty Brenda's bestselling book, The Last Daughter, will also be available for sale at this event and there will be a book signing opportunity with Aunty Brenda.
