Have Your Say on Draft Wildlife Protection Area Policy

03/10/2025

Georges River Council is seeking community feedback on the draft Wildlife Protection Area Policy.

Wildlife Protection Areas are areas set aside to protect native wildlife and reduce the impact of companion animals on native birds, mammals, and reptiles.

Under the Companion Animals Act 1998, Council can declare these areas on Council-managed land. In Georges River, Category 2 Wildlife Protection Areas apply, which prohibit cats and allow dogs on a leash.

In the Georges River Local Government Area, 19 bushland reserves have been declared as Wildlife Protection Areas, including Carss Bush Park, Gannons Park, H.V Evatt Park, Myles Dunphy Reserve, Oatley Park, Poulton Park and more.

The draft 2025 Policy is a revision of the original Wildlife Protection Area Policy adopted in 2022. It establishes clear responsibilities for both Council and the community, outlines the locations of wildlife protection areas, and specifies the activities permitted within them.

Council invites the community to provide feedback and share suggestions to improve the draft Wildlife Protection Area Policy.

Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, “The Georges River area is home to over 330 native animal species, and our Wildlife Protection Area Policy helps safeguard this rich diversity.

“I encourage residents to review the draft 2025 Policy and share their feedback. By working together, we can protect native wildlife, maintain safe and accessible reserves, and support responsible pet ownership.”

The public consultation period is open until Monday 24 November 2025.
