Georges River Council is seeking community feedback on its draft Asbestos Management Policy, which is currently on public exhibition until 3 November 2025. The draft policy has been developed to guide the safe management of asbestos across the Local Government Area and ensure compliance with NSW regulatory requirements.
Asbestos-containing materials remain present in many homes, particularly those built or renovated before the 1990s, and present ongoing health risks if improperly handled. The draft Policy clearly outlines the Council’s legal responsibilities, processes for risk identification, handling procedures, and collaboration with agencies such as SafeWork NSW, the EPA, and NSW Health.
Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, “This draft policy is about giving our community confidence that asbestos will be managed safely and consistently across Georges River. It sets out clear processes for how Council responds, works with other agencies, and supports residents when asbestos is identified.
“We want to hear from our community throughout this exhibition period. Community feedback will help shape the final policy, so it not only meets our responsibilities, but also reflects the expectations and priorities of the people who live and work here.”
