Nominations are now open for the 2027 Historical Markers Program!
This annual program recognises the heritage and identity of the Georges River. Launched in 2018, each marker celebrates the stories of people and places, as recommended by the local community. With 42 markers across the local government area (LGA), we are now seeking to add up to 5 new sites next year.
We’re looking for nominations that:

Have a strong association with a person, particular community or cultural group.

Contribute to an understanding of the area’s history.

Demonstrate special characteristics of a cultural or natural place.
Nominating a marker helps keep local history alive. It honours our diverse communities and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage.
Previous markers showcase a range of stories across the LGA. The 2026 markers were announced on Monday 14 September and include:
Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, “Our community is full of remarkable people and places with stories worth remembering.”
“I encourage everyone to submit a nomination. Let’s celebrate our shared history and ensure we preserve it for generations to come”.
