School Road Safety

There are more than 40 schools in the Georges River Local Government Area.

School zones operate from 8am to 9.30am and from 2.30pm to 4pm (during official school days).

When travelling through school zones during these times, a driver must be travelling a speed of 40km/h or less. These school zones can be identified by 'start school zone 40' and 'end school zone' signs.

School Zone Safety Tips for dropping off and picking up by car:

  • Obey parking signs and park legally around schools
  • Stick to the 40km/h speed limit in school zones
  • Look out for buses pulling out
  • Always give way to pedestrians
  • It is safest for children to get out of the car on the kerb side of the road, as this puts them away from passing traffic

School Zone Safety Tips for walking to and from school:

  • Always hold your children’s hand up until the age of eight (8) years old
  • Plan your trip to and from school
  • Always use a pedestrian crossing where possible
  • Always look both ways when crossing the road and ensure it is safe to cross
  • Always drop children off near the school gates
