Hurstville Museum and Gallery 'Guraban' exhibition shortlisted for National Trust Heritage Award

01/05/2023

Hurstville Museum & Gallery has been shortlisted in the National Trust Heritage Awards for the exhibition 'Guraban: where the saltwater meets the freshwater', which was on display from 29 October 2022 - 29 January 2023.

The exhibition is shortlisted in the category of ‘Events, Exhibitions and Tours' and is one of eight projects selected.

Guraban combined historical material and objects, documents and photographs sourced from public and private collections along with the work of leading First Nations visual artists, Dennis Golding, Nicole Monks & Jenine Boeree, Djon Mundine, Marilyn Russell and Jason Wing.

The exhibition presented stories associated with the Georges River in the local region, highlighting multiple perspectives on historical and contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander connections to the river, its people and places.

Georges River Council Mayor Nick Katris said, “I’d like to congratulate the Hurstville Museum & Gallery team on their nomination for this year’s National Trust Heritage Awards.

“I was very impressed with ‘Guraban: where the saltwater meets the freshwater’, the team did an extraordinary amount of hard work to achieve success.”

The exhibition merged social history and visual arts, utilising the duality of Hurstville Museum & Gallery, and demonstrated the importance of both in storytelling and sharing histories.

It was developed in collaboration with local First Nations groups, individuals, artists and the Gujaga Foundation, a peak organisation leading Dharawal language, cultural and research activities within eastern, southern and south western Sydney.

The exhibition was supported by the NSW Government through Create NSW and the winners will be announced on 12 May.
