Floodplain risk resilience in Georges River needs community input

11/07/2023

Georges River Council has developed the Draft Overland Flow Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan to manage overland flood risk.

A public exhibition for the Draft Overland Flow Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan was open for feedback last year. Following the public exhibition period, in order to address the submissions received, additional assessment has been undertaken, this has included:

  • Revision of the hydraulic model at the northern study area boundary (along Josephine Street, Riverwood)
  • Revision of the methodology used to determine the flood Planning Area (section 8.3.2 of the report and Figure A23)
The Overland Flow Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan is an important step in increasing our community’s resilience to flooding. It highlights key recommendations to support Council’s planning. Recommendations focus on drainage and engineering works and improving emergency response.

The current study is based on updated inputs applied to the previous Overland Flow Flood Study for Hurstville, Mortdale and Peakhurst Wards completed in 2016.

In the early stages of the study, Council sought community input through a questionnaire and encouraged the community to become involved through Council’s Floodplain Risk Management Committee. This input has been considered in the preparation of the Draft Overland Flow Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan now available for the community to again have a say. The consultation will be open until July 25, 2023.
