Art in the Afternoon: Mask Making

Over two sessions, create your own unique mask in a hands-on workshop.

 <bodytext>
Create your own unique mask in this two session hands-on workshop with artist Kassandra. Design a mask to wear or display on your wall. You can bring your own ideas or choose from images provided by the facilitator for inspiration.

In session 1, you will sculpt your mask in clay and cover it with paper mache. In session 2, you will remove the mask from its clay base, then paint and decorate it using acrylics. Wearable masks will be fitted with elastic. Kassandra will guide you through every step of the process, demonstrating each stage of mask making. By the end of the workshop, you will take home a finished mask.

This program is linked to our Main Gallery exhibition, Woven from a hundred flowers: Celebrating our Nepalese community. The exhibition explores the rich culture and diverse stories of the Nepalese community of the Georges River region. This exhibition showcases the historical, social, and cultural background of Nepal while reflecting the vibrant and evolving Nepalese community of our area. The workshop will begin with a short visit to the exhibition, where we will look at the masks on display and discuss their shapes, colours and meanings. These works will serve as inspiration only. Participants will create their own original designs and will not copy the masks exhibited.

Woven from a hundred flowers: Celebrating our Nepalese community is on display from 1 May until 30 August 2026. <bodytext>
Kids aged 3-5 and their parents/carers will explore sensory processes through song, stories, art and craft to develop skills together.

Our Mini Maker program aims to engage children aged 3-5 years and their parent or carer to learn and develop skills together.

Each month features a new theme and activity, encouraging families to explore art through stories, songs, sensory play, and simple crafts. With plenty of opportunities to get messy and creative, children can develop fine motor skills and self-expression, all with the support and participation of their grown-ups.

This is a shared experience where carers and little makers learn, play, and grow together in a relaxed and friendly environment.
June Pride Book Club

Join us for Pride Book Club at the library!

 <bodytext>
Join us on the last Thursday of each month at Clive James Library, Kogarah for the Pride Book Club, where we read and discuss books that explore LGBTQIA+ experiences, voices, and themes. This club is a space for celebrating queer stories in all their variety, from fiction to memoir, graphic novels to poetry, and for connecting with others in an open, respectful, and inclusive environment.

Whether you’re a lifelong reader or just starting out, everyone is welcome. Each month we’ll highlight a different theme or focus, encouraging conversations around identity, representation, and the power of storytelling.

Come along to share your thoughts, discover new favourites, and celebrate the diverse world of queer literature.

June’s Theme: Space Queers
This month we're celebrating queer representation in science fiction. Whether it’s starship crews forming chosen families, intergalactic adventures, or romances that span planets it’s here. From epic space operas to intimate journeys across the stars, these books imagine futures where queer people exist, thrive, and shape the universe.

Join current Artist in Residence Tahlia Henderson for an Open Studio session offering an informal artist talk and Q&A. Visitors are invited into Tahlia’s working space to view her tools and materials, explore unfinished and completed works, and engage with a slideshow of reference images. This open and welcoming format provides a rare insight into her artistic process and practice.

Tahlia Henderson is a landscape painter working from bushland found on Gadigal Country and surrounding areas. She currently lives and works on Wangal Country in Sydney’s Inner West. Since completing her Visual Arts degree at Sydney College of Arts (2012-2014), Tahlia has developed a distinctive watercolour practice, capturing the diversity of ecosystems she encounters while walking through bushland. She works from photographs taken on site, later constructing scene-specific compositions in the studio.

Her detailed landscapes are set against stark black backgrounds, reflecting an awareness of place and belonging. As a descendant of Scottish immigrants, Tahlia acknowledges that connection to this land belongs to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, their Elders, and culture.

Tahlia has been a finalist in the Paddington Art Prize (2022) and the Blacktown Art Prize (2024), and recently presented her first solo exhibition, ‘Scenes from Gadigal and Surrounds’.

Birds of Carss Park

Join current Artist in Residence Tahlia Henderson for a free, family-friendly drop-in session celebrating collage and birdlife at Carss Park.

 <bodytext>
Join current Artist in Residence Tahlia Henderson for a free, family-friendly drop-in session celebrating collage and birdlife at Carss Park.

During this activity, families will be introduced to the creative world of collage, inspired by birds and the natural surroundings of Carss Park. Children will create their own unique collage artwork to take home. Each participating family will also receive a specially designed bird-watching booklet, created by the artist to complement your visit to Carss Park. Use the booklet to explore the park, identify the featured birds, and complete engaging self-guided games and activities together.
