School Yard Litter Audit
Georges River Council has designed and produced a School Litter Program to help students, teachers and the school community reduce school yard litter and to cover environmental education themes within the school syllabus. Available for free, Council provides a School Litter Program Guide which contains all the required information and instructions for schools within the Georges River Local Government Area to deliver the program.

The school litter program encompasses the following activities:
  • School Yard Litter Audit:  Students from stages 1 – 5 are invited to participate in a litter audit. Council developed (in accordance with the NSW Environment Protection Authority’s Local Litter Check) an instruction manual which guides students through the collection of litter, separating litter according to commingled recycling, general waste and food organics.
  • School Art Competition: Students from stages 1 – 5 are invited to participate in an art competition. Students are invited to ‘draw a clean, litter-free Hurstville and design a creative and positive litter slogan to feature on the artwork’. Three winning artworks from each stage are selected, with the winning artists awarded prizes by the Deputy Mayor at a school assembly. Winning artworks are also displayed on flag poles around the Georges River LGA.
To register as an interested school, please contact Council’s Waste Education Officer. All primary and secondary schools within the Georges River Local Government Area are eligible to participate for free.
