Responsible Cafes

What

Cafes can reduce or eliminate disposable coffee cups by offering a discount to customers with reusable takeaway cups! Georges River Council has partnered with Responsible Cafes to encourage cafes in the Local Government Area to do so.

Participating cafes instantly receive a downloadable vintage-style poster and an information sheet so they can educate customers on the issue. Put up your poster and shout it from the rooftops! Post a funky pledge photo (with the poster and/or reusable cup in action in the cafe – or something more creative!) with the hashtag #ResponsibleCafes to be included on the social stream of our website.

Throughout the year, Responsible Cafes will be in touch with new helpful resources and metrics on the benefits of the program.

When/Where

Cafes can sign up to Responsible Cafes anywhere, anytime at https://responsiblecafes.org/register-your-cafe/

Why

  • 1 billion take away cups and lids are used, landfilled and/or littered every year

  • Due to a hidden, nasty plastic lining in single use takeaway cups, most are never recycled

  • Takeaway coffee cups are rarely recycled or composted due to inadequate industrial composting facilities and the difficulty of getting the cups/lids there

  • Becoming a Responsible Cafe saves money and reduces waste, and incentivises customers to do the right thing by bringing their own cups

  • Cafes in the Georges River Council area signed up to Responsible Cafes will be featured on this website and will be promoted on council’s media channels.
