Original Notice - 10 June 2025
At its meeting on Monday 26 May 2025, Georges River Council resolved to seek consent from the property owner of 10 Boundary Road, Mortdale for the removal of a eucalyptus tree on the property.
Council recognises the importance of trees within the Local Government Area (LGA). However, a difficult decision has been made to remove the tree to ensure the safety of the community.
The tree has undergone numerous studies and assessments in response to safety concerns. These include falling branches, proximity to a busy intersection and a pedestrian crossing. Removal is required because it poses an unacceptable risk to public safety.
Over the course of two years, there has been frequent correspondence between Council and the property owner. Including site visits and meetings with technical experts, Council staff and Councillors.
Council is committed to enhancing its urban canopy, as per its Tree Management Policy. It prioritises practical tree retention, considering tree removal as a last option. Whilst encouraging planting a variety of suitable tree species. This helps maximise the sustainability and resilience of the urban forest across the LGA.
Council has set a target of achieving 40% urban canopy cover by 2038. This goal aligns with the Greater Sydney Region Plan.
