Georges River Council recently undertook changes in response to community feedback and concerns on illegal parking and unsafe traffic conditions around Sans Souci Leisure Centre and Sans Souci Park.

The changes have seen a significant reduction in illegal parking, reduced traffic congestion, improved traffic flow and addressed community safety concerns for users of Sans Souci Leisure Centre and San Souci Park.
 
The changes included upgrades to parking, accessibility and safety improvement works at Sans Souci Leisure Centre concourse and shared access road and were completed in March 2026.
 
The works were delivered to improve safety, accessibility and traffic flow for visitors, staff and the surrounding community.
 
The works included:

  • Two existing Mobility Parking spaces were upgraded with new signage and line‑marking to meet current Australian Standards.

  • Two additional Mobility Parking spaces were created to improve access for community members who need them.

  • The eastern parking bay is now designated as a No Parking area, except for Waste Trucks, Sans Souci Leisure Centre vehicles and authorised Council vehicles.

  • New sandstone barrier blocks placed along the shared access road.

  • New hatched and yellow line markings clearly identify areas where parking is not permitted and prevent vehicles from stopping on the shared access road.

  • A new 15‑metre No Parking zone has been added to the waiting bay on the access road linking the Leisure Centre to Riverside Drive.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Were any parking spots removed?

    The space at the front entry was not an authorised parking bay, and therefore no formal parking spaces were removed when the changes were made.

  • Why couldn’t more accessible parking spaces be built?

    The amount of accessible parking spaces was increased in the recent changes. There were previously two and after project completion, there are now four.

  • Why are there gaps between the accessible parking spaces?

    The new accessible parking standards require these spaces to be level and larger than standard parking spaces. This additional space helps people get in and out of their vehicle, unload a wheelchair or mobility aid, and transfer safely without being forced into traffic or between parked cars.

    The larger size and stricter layout requirements provide safer, more practical and more dignified access for people who rely on accessible parking.

  • Why a pedestrian pathway was not installed?

    The shared access road is designated for cyclists, pedestrians, and vehicles as per the San Souci Plan of Management (May 2023). It provides a safe, low-speed environment for all users within one flexible space.
