Significant Tree Register Nominations open

Council is excited to announce the implementation of a register of significant trees to better recognise and protect trees of importance in the community.
We invite all community members to participate in this important process by nominating unique trees within the Georges River Council area that hold special visual, botanic, ecological and historical, commemorative, cultural or social significance
Nominated trees can be situated on either public land, either owned by the Council or under Council’s care, control, and management. Additionally, trees situated on private land may be nominated, provided the nominee has approval from all the property owners.
Community members will submit their nominations via the Your Say platform by filling out either a nomination form for private trees or using the Georges River Council map for public trees. The form and map both require essential information such as the tree species, the precise location of the tree and an estimate of the tree's height, a recent photograph, and a selection of the assessment criteria that the tree qualifies for nomination for the significant tree register.
The nomination period will be open until 24 July 2023, allowing time for residents to share their local knowledge and nominate the unique trees they consider significant against the assessment criteria.
After the nomination period concludes, Council will conduct a thorough review of the submitted nominations to ensure all information has been provided correctly and meets the eligibility requirements.
An independent expert consultant will assess all significant tree nominations that progress through the eligibility review. The consultant will carefully consider each nomination in line with the defined criteria and the approved Significant Tree definition.
A further report, including the results of the community consultation and the draft Significant Tree Register, will be presented to the Council in late 2023, provided the necessary funding is available to fund the necessary reviews.
Mayor Nick Katris said, “The significant tree register is a great way to celebrate the remarkable trees that contribute to the unique character of our community.”
