Georges River Council is encouraging the local community to volunteer and glove up for the 35th Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 2 March 2025.
Clean Up Australia was founded in 1990 by Ian Kiernan AO. Since its inception, over 22 million Australians have registered as a volunteer to Clean Up their local community year-round.
Last year, approximately 300 Georges River residents registered themselves or family/friend groups to collect litter for the annual event and collected over a tonne of litter across 32 clean-up sites in the Georges River area.
The FY23 Clean Up Australia Litter Report which provides an annual snapshot of litter collected by volunteers in a calendar year, highlighted that plastics continue to dominate, marking 81 per cent of all surveyed litter. The report also showed that 44 percent of all litter was cleared from waterway sites, 16 percent from parks and 11 percent from bushland.
Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, “We are a proud community who values the environment, and this is a great way of helping to Keep Georges River Beautiful,’’ she said.
“My fellow councillors and I will be out on the day with our gloves to pick up litter, and I hope the community will join us in our quest to help our environment so we can enjoy our parks, bushland and waterways now and for future generations to come.’’
Registrations for Clean Up Australia Day 2025 are now open. Volunteers who register will receive a free Clean Up kit, containing gloves, bags and other resources, with packs for individuals, families and community groups available.
Businesses are asked to pay a small fee to cover costs.
There will be a special Business Clean Up Day on Tuesday February 25 2025, and Schools Clean Up Day on Friday February 28, 2025.
If you are unable to participate, donations to Clean Up Australia are welcome, with 100 percent of funds raised going directly to providing Clean Up kits.
