Celebrate Youth Week through the lens of local youth film makers

In celebration of Youth Week 2017, members of the Georges River Council community are invited to attend the opening of Short and Stuff: An exploration of the 2016 Short Stuff Youth Film Festival exhibition at the Dragon’s Lair Gallery, Hurstville Museum & Gallery on Friday 7 April.
Youth Week is an opportunity for young people to express their ideas and views, act on issues that affect their lives, and create and enjoy activities and events.
The exhibition, running from 1–30 April, will showcase the submissions from young local film makers to the 2016 Short Stuff Youth Film Festival, Southern Sydney’s premiere youth film festival hosted annually by Georges River Council.
Last year’s competition comprised of 11 teams, with over 40 young people aged 12-24 years participating.
Attendees will be able to view exclusive behind the scenes content and explore the festival process, which challenged teams to create a short film in under 48 hours.
It was fast and furious film making at its finest, with Shopfront Arts Co-op providing competitors with technical support.
Georges River Council Administrator John Rayner said the competition gave participants an opportunity to show off their visual media skills, which are becoming increasingly important in a media rich world.
“In order to produce a film within 48 hours these young people had to display extraordinary time management skills, team work and creativity,” he said.
“Participants not only benefited from working on all the creative elements, but the overall experience, including the challenges and enjoyment of collaboration, which translate into valuable real world skills,” he added.
The exhibition will display stills from the films, behind the scenes action and awards night photographs.
The short films produced, exploring a range of issues important to young people including mental health and resilience, will be screened in the exhibition space.
