Applications for Historical Markers Program 2023 now open

Applications are now open for Council’s Historical Markers Program 2023 where residents can nominate a historic person or place in Georges River to be officially recognised.
The annual program was launched in 2018 to provide an opportunity for members of the community to recommend people and places of historical and cultural importance for recognition. Over the years, the markers create an open-air archive for people to explore.
Mayor Nick Katris said, “Our Historical Markers Program assists us linking people of the past with sites of the present and we have appreciated residents’ past involvement.
“This program creates awareness of the history, heritage and cultural identity of the Georges River Local Government Area to build a strong sense of identity and belonging in the community.
“Council feels it is important for our residents to have a say on who and what is celebrated; I encourage our community to put forward a submission to participate in our local historical archives.”
Submissions for Historical Markers need to demonstrate that the nominated site has one or more of the following criteria:
  • a strong or special association with the life or work of a person, or group of people
  • a strong or special association with a particular community or cultural group
  • marks and contributes to an understanding of the area’s cultural or natural history
  • demonstrates special characteristics of a cultural or natural place
Applications close on Monday 1 May 2023 and will be evaluated by the Historical Markers Panel. The selected Historical Markers will be announced in September 2023 as part of NSW History Week.
