Acquisition of properties in Cook Street, Mortdale

In February 2014 the former Hurstville City Council resolved to compulsorily acquire two residential properties located at 23 and 25 Cook Street, Mortdale following numerous unsuccessful attempts to purchase the properties at market value.

The two properties are situated adjacent to Council’s Cook Street public carpark located in the heart of the busy Mortdale shopping centre and next to the Mortdale Railway Station.

The two properties will be acquired for the purpose of expanding the existing public car park to construct additional parking for local businesses and visitors to the Mortdale shopping centre.

Council has recently held a meeting with the current owners of the properties and is awaiting a response from the owners on their future accommodation needs.

Compensation to the owners of the properties will be determined independently of Council by the NSW Valuer General. Georges River Council does not have a role in establishing the value of the properties or the compensation payable.

The need for additional car parking in the Mortdale shopping centre was identified in the former Hurstville City Council’s Community Strategic Plan 2025.  Construction of the first stage of the Cook Street car park was completed in 2011.
