Consultation has concluded

Update

This consultation is now closed, thank you to everyone who provided feedback to Council about the road names. Your feedback was considered by Council on Monday 19 December 2022 and the proposed names were unanimously endorsed. From here, the road names will be gazetted by Council and made official by the Geographical Names Board of NSW. New road signs and addresses will come into effect after the names are made official.

Background

Georges River Council is proposing names for unnamed roads in Oatley and Riverwood further to Council Resolution COM039-22.

The names were chosen according to the Georges River Place Naming Policy for their connection to the unique history and culture of our area. These names are required to make sure people can easily find their way around our area. This is especially important for the quick response of emergency services and essential utility providers like NBN, power and water.

Please let us know what you think and tell us if there is anything to show that these names are inappropriate before they are made official.

Bubuk Place

The name Bubuk Place is proposed for the unnamed road, located in Oatley on the west side of the Illawarra Railway and running north from Mimosa Street.

Bubuk (pronounced boo-book) is the Aboriginal word from the Dharawal dialect for the species of owl (Ninox Boobook) that is native to the area. This name is derived from the distinctive sound of the owl’s call and corresponds with the general priorities of the Georges River Place Naming Policy to select names that represent Aboriginal history, heritage and culture.

This naming proposal will allow new addresses to be assigned to the Waratah Street properties which have their main entrance on the unnamed road and no direct access to Waratah Street, in accordance with the NSW Address Policy.

Theatre Lane

The name Theatre Lane is proposed for the unnamed road, located in Riverwood between Webb Street and Short Road.

The name is derived from the Herne Bay Melody Theatre which significantly contributed to the development of the character of Herne Bay (as Riverwood was then known) after World War Two.

The theatre was located adjacent to the unnamed lane, on the corner of Belmore Rd and Webb Street. It opened in 1947 and was known for its popular Saturday matinee program until it closed in 1965.

This naming proposal will improve wayfinding for people accessing businesses and parking in the area.
