Who we are

Our organisation was officially declared on 12 May 2016 by the NSW Minister for Local Government as Georges River Council, the result of the amalgamation of the former Hurstville City Council and Kogarah City Council.

Council has since developed strong working relationships within the community and strives to deliver excellence in all aspects of work, social and community life in the Georges River Council area.

Located in Sydney’s south, the Georges River area offers extraordinary lifestyle benefits, from the waterways of the Georges River itself to the open spaces such as Carss Bush Park, Jubilee Stadium, Hurstville Oval and Oatley Park. Our population is over 150,000 and is comprised of residents from all over the world including China, Nepal, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom. We are home to two large commercial centres – Hurstville - a major transport interchange and retail destination, and Kogarah - an education precinct and home to St George Private and Public Hospitals.

We have 600 permanent full-time and part-time staff from a wide variety of professions, whose collective efforts help make Georges River a fantastic place to live, work and visit.

Our staff are led by an innovative and professional Executive Team who have established the goal of being the best performing local government organisation in NSW.

In March this year we presented the inaugural 'Rivers Run Conference', designed to provide networking and learning opportunities for all our staff. Collectively, staff were engaged to help formulate and embed Council’s shared goals, vision and values, which underpin our future operations and continued success.
