Grow your Career

Council’s Learning Program

Georges River Council’s Ready Set Grow Learning Program is informed by the 70-20-10 model for professional development; 70% from on-the-job experiences, 20% from feedback, mentoring and coaching and 10% from formal learning programs.

Designed to enhance our organisational capability and equip our staff with the tools and capabilities to develop themselves and career, the Ready Set Grow! Learning Program 2018-2020 is based on six key themes:

  • Corporate Governance

  • Customer Experience, Engagement and Communication

  • Leadership

  • Project Management

  • Systems and Technology

  • Work Health and Safety and Wellbeing

To learn more about this program, review the Ready Set Grow! Learning Program 2018-2020.

In addition to our learning program, we also offer our staff annual study assistance up to $2,000, or 50%, for course fees, paid study leave of up to 6 days per year, and a range of in house courses and motivational talks available to all staff. There are also opportunities to attend seminars, network meetings, conferences and ongoing skill and competency development.

River Run Conference

The River Run conference is an annual networking and learning opportunity for all staff to engage and participate in a collective effort to establish and embed Council's shared goals, values and the pillars that underpin our continued success and future operations.

Take a look at our 2018 River Run Conference highlights.

Secondment opportunities

We encourage our staff to take advantage of 'acting in higher duties' roles and secondments to develop their leadership capabilities, broaden their skills and prepare them for potential future career progression opportunities.

Flexible working conditions

Most of our staff can take advantage of our flex time or RDO scheme, which could mean a nine-day fortnight for you.

Other benefits include:

  • 20 days annual leave for 12 months of service.

  • 15 days cumulative sick leave.

  • Long service leave adds up to 6.5 weeks every 5 years with us, after 15 years’ service you will get 2.2 weeks every year

  • 24 weeks (half pay) or 12 weeks (full pay) paid maternity leave.

  • Paid paternity leave at time of birth and if primary care giver.

Coming from another Council?

Are you coming from another Council? It doesn’t mean you lose the leave entitlements you’ve accumulated there. We will honour up to 13 weeks of accumulated sick leave and 5 years' worth of transferrable long service leave.

Salary sacrifice

You have the option to reduce your taxable income by salary sacrificing additional super, childcare (Council Children's Centres), car parking (pending availability) or a novated car lease.

Staying healthy

  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP) offers confidential counseling services for employees and family.

  • Wellbeing program, including flu vaccinations, skin checks and more.
  • Fitness Passport with access to more than 200 gyms, leisure centres and pools.

Staff recognition program

We recognise that our employees want a workplace where they have the opportunity to use and develop their skills and receive recognition for their contribution.

Our Shine Bright Rewards program recognises outstanding service, performance, innovation and demonstration of Council's mission, vision and values. This program respects the individual and is built on personal choice. Our people can choose their own rewards and how they receive their recognition.  Our staff will be rewarded instantaneously for significant performance, innovation and demonstration of Council's mission and values.

Quarterly morning teas

On the last Friday of the quarter, Council hosts a mufti day morning tea acknowledging staff service awards.  Staff will contribute by either bringing in an item of food or contributing donations to charity.  These morning teas provide a great opportunity to network with other team members and have some fun!
