Winners announced for prestigious 2016 Kogarah Art Prize

Dr Gene Sherman AM, judge for the 2016 Kogarah Art Prize, spoke about the high calibre of entries received and finalists who were selected for inclusion in the annual exhibition.

The prize, now in its fifth year, has been incorporated into Georges River Council program of events. The evening’s celebrations were formalised by General Manager Ms Gail Connolly who announced the winners to a packed room of art enthusiasts.

"I am delighted to be able to introduce such a prestigious prize, which has grown every year since its inception both in the number of entries received and in the variety of submissions," she said.

Prizes in 2016 totalled $14,000 in value. The winners were:

Kogarah Art Prize

 

 

: $10,000 awarded to Vittoria Oriana for Boundaries

Place of Reeds Prize for a local artist

 

 

: $3,000 plus a solo exhibition in 2017 awarded to Sabrina Martins Loule Rodriguez for mi hombre

Commended Prizes

 

 

: awarded to Steve Salo for Romany Latham, Actor, Back to Back Theatre and Yvonne Ferguson for Relics

A Packing Room Prize was also tallied by staff votes from Council, going to Bronwen Basset for her work

Clovelly Sea.

A total of 206 entries were received for this year’s prize from all over the country, 39 of which were selected for the Finalists’ Exhibition and 7 of which were submitted by artists residing in the Georges River Council local government area (LGA).

Visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite painting for the People’s Choice Prize, supported by Visual Art at Arncliffe. The People’s Choice Prize will be announced on Monday 27 June.
